Beyond the Central Guard: Choose Your Protectorate

The Protectorate Defense League is bigger than one army.

With the Protectorate Starter Box on the horizon, the Central Guard may be your first introduction to the Protectorate Defense League—but they are far from your only option.

Across the Remnants, different Protectorates have developed their own cultures, doctrines, and ways of fighting. Whether you prefer disciplined professionals, cunning frontier fighters, or cutting-edge cybernetic technology, there is a Protectorate waiting for you.

So, if the Central Guard isn’t quite your style, here are three other Protectorates to explore and build your task force around.

The Border Republic Protectorate

On the volatile frontier of the Remnants, the Border Republic Protectorate stands as one of the League’s most hardened military forces.

Its Republican Guardsmen are more than well-trained soldiers. They are combat-tested veterans who have spent their careers defending a region where danger is never far away. Their reputation for discipline, determination, and battlefield skill has made them some of the most respected soldiers within the Protectorate Defense League.

The Border Republic doesn’t have the luxury of fighting only when conditions are favorable.

They hold the line.

On the tabletop: expect a force built around elite, dependable soldiers and battlefield resilience. The Border Republic is for players who want their units to perform consistently and punish opponents who underestimate them.

If you want your task force to feel like a professional military force forged by years of fighting on the frontier, the Border Republic may be for you.

The Outlands Protectorate

Beyond the more settled regions of the Protectorate lies the Outlands—a rugged expanse where lawlessness, piracy, slavery, and privateering remain constant threats.

To survive there, the Protectorate relies on its Frontiersmen.

These soldiers have developed a reputation for being crafty, adaptable, and willing to fight differently from conventional military forces. They know the terrain, understand their enemies, and aren’t afraid to use unconventional tactics to get the job done.

In the Outlands, fighting fair isn’t always an option.

On the tabletop: the Outlands favors mobility, clever positioning, opportunistic attacks, and tactical flexibility.

This is the Protectorate for players who enjoy making the battlefield work for them—using maneuver and cunning to create advantages rather than simply overpowering the enemy.

If the Border Republic holds the line, the Outlands hunts beyond it.

E’Selda Protectorate

And then there’s E’Selda.

Often referred to throughout the Protectorate as the “Problem Child,” E’Selda has developed a reputation for pushing technological boundaries—and occasionally pushing the patience of everyone around them.

Cybernetic augmentation, advanced technology, and aggressive experimentation are simply part of life on E’Selda. Their engineers and soldiers have embraced modifications that other Protectorates might consider excessive, creating a military force that blurs the line between soldier, machine, and weapon.

E’Selda doesn’t simply use Protectorate technology.

They modify it.

On the tabletop: E’Selda is for players who want advanced technology, specialized capabilities, and unconventional tools. Their forces can bring unique solutions to problems that other Protectorates may have to approach differently.

They are the experimental edge of the Protectorate Defense League—and sometimes the edge cuts both ways.

One League. Many Ways to Fight.

This is what makes the Protectorate Defense League so interesting to build and play.

The PDL isn’t designed around one universal battlefield solution. Its philosophy is closer to having a tool for every job.

Protectorate forces reward players who think ahead, manage their resources, and control the flow of battle. Rather than simply rushing forward and trading blows, PDL commanders can manipulate engagements, exploit specialized units, and use their command resources to shape the battlefield.

That means your choices matter.

Do you want the disciplined professionalism of the Border Republic?

The cunning and adaptability of the Outlands?

The technological experimentation of E’Selda?

Or will you begin with the Central Guard and build from there?
