Choosing Your First Army: Federal Coalition or Protectorate Defense League?

One of the first questions every new commander asks is:

“Which faction should I play?”

In The Remnant Chronicles, every faction is designed around a unique military doctrine rather than simply having stronger weapons or tougher units. Each army approaches the battlefield differently, rewarding different styles of play.

The easiest way to understand them is through a simple analogy.

The Federal Coalition of Sol

The Toolbox

The Federal Coalition is the most versatile military force in the Three Spheres.

Imagine opening a well-stocked toolbox. It may not contain the perfect tool for every problem, but it has something that can handle almost anything you encounter. That’s the Coalition philosophy.

Coalition commanders excel at flexibility. Their units are dependable, adaptable, and capable of responding to changing battlefield conditions without relying on highly specialized strategies.

Their doctrine is built around Combined Shock and Awe Tactics—using coordinated infantry, armor, and supporting firepower to rapidly overwhelm enemy defenses before the opponent can establish control.

Coalition commanders can expect:

  • Flexible, general-purpose units that perform well in nearly every mission.

  • Strong combined-arms tactics that reward balanced army composition.

  • Reliable leadership focused on maintaining cohesion and battlefield stability.

  • Abilities that improve the effectiveness of units already in the fight rather than relying on complicated combinations.

  • An army that adapts as the battle unfolds.

The Federal Coalition is an excellent choice for new players because its units are forgiving, reliable, and effective in a wide variety of situations. Experienced players will also appreciate the depth that comes from coordinating multiple battlefield elements into a unified offensive.

The Protectorate Defense League

The Workbench

Where the Coalition carries a toolbox, the Protectorate fights from a workbench.

Every tool has a purpose.

Every plan has a sequence.

Success comes not from reacting quickly—but from preparing correctly.

The Protectorate Defense League rewards commanders who enjoy careful planning and battlefield control. Rather than relying on broad versatility, Protectorate units are highly specialized. Each unit excels at a particular role, and victory comes from assembling those pieces into a carefully engineered battle plan.

Protectorate doctrine favors prolonged engagements. As battles continue, skilled commanders gain opportunities to manipulate the battlefield, control objectives, and gradually force opponents into unfavorable positions.

Protectorate commanders can expect:

  • Highly specialized units built for specific battlefield roles.

  • Powerful battlefield control and area denial capabilities.

  • Leadership focused on command point management and tactical planning.

  • Strong synergies between units that reward careful positioning.

  • A deliberate playstyle that becomes stronger the longer the battle continues.

The Protectorate is ideal for players who enjoy strategy games where planning several turns ahead is just as important as winning the current engagement.

Which Army Is Right for You?

Choose the Federal Coalition if you enjoy:

  • Flexible combined-arms warfare

  • Fast, decisive offensives

  • Balanced armies that can answer any threat

  • Adapting to changing battlefield conditions

Choose the Protectorate Defense League if you enjoy:

  • Methodical planning

  • Specialized units with defined battlefield roles

  • Resource and command management

  • Controlling the pace of the battle

Two Doctrines. One War.

Neither faction is objectively stronger than the other.

The Coalition wins through adaptability, momentum, and coordinated assaults.

The Protectorate wins through preparation, precision, and battlefield control.

Both are capable of victory—the difference lies in how you choose to command.
