Determining Deployment Zones & Mission Structure

Before battle begins, commanders must establish the structure of the battlefield. This includes dividing the play area into deployment zones, identifying home edges, and defining the nature of the mission itself.
Determining Deployment Zones
This step divides the battlefield into distinct operational areas and establishes each player’s
Home Edge
A Deployment Zone is the designated area where a player may deploy their forces before the game begins.
Players may only deploy units within their assigned zone (e.g., Red Player Deployment Zone, Blue Player Deployment Zone) unless a special rule explicitly states otherwise.
Home Edge
Each player’s Home Edge serves multiple operational purposes:
Entry point for reinforcements (unless otherwise specified)
Exit point for units retreating from combat
Potential in-game objective depending on scenario rules

Neutral Ground
Any area of the battlefield not designated as a deployment zone is considered Neutral Ground.
Neutral Ground:
May not be used for initial deployment
Exists to separate opposing deployment areas
May contain objectives depending on mission design
Has no inherent control or ownership unless defined by scenario rules
Scenario-Based Layouts
Some missions will define battlefield layouts explicitly. In these cases, players must construct the board exactly as described by the scenario.
If no scenario layout is provided, players may either:
Agree on a battlefield layout together, or
Roll randomly using the Deployment Layout Chart below

Mission Types
There are five primary Mission Types representing the strategic objective of any engagement within the Remnants conflict.
Both players may select the same mission type or choose different ones. Alternatively, if both players agree, they may roll a d10 and divide the result by 2 (rounding down) to determine the mission category.

Design Intent
Deployment zones and mission structure are intended to:
Create clear tactical boundaries before engagement begins
Ensure balanced asymmetry between forces
Support scenario-driven gameplay rather than static setups
Encourage flexible mission interpretation based on battlefield conditions
